I believe getting a doctoral degree is a sizeable milestone in the journey of education. I wish to pursue the highest degree in education which will help me to get the required exposure and a suitable platform to showcase my skills and knowledge. This statement of purpose is an effort to unveil my potential as an aspiring graduate student.
Academic & Research Background:
It was my enthusiasm accompanied by the scope for innovations and the opportunities available to make new discoveries in life science research which encouraged me to pursue a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Biotechnology and Chemistry at School of Biological research, Helsinki, Finland. During the final year of my under graduation, I chose to work on a project entitled Molecular Cloning of HIV-1 Reverse Transcriptase in the pET-28a expression vector under the guidance of Dr. Kriti Desai. This piece of research work was incredible and strengthened the foundation of my research endeavors.
The next step I took in my journey towards fulfilling my dream was to enroll in the Master’s Program (MSc) in Microbiology at SDFR Institute of Technology and Science, Stockholm, Swedem. Owing to my keen interest in incurable human diseases like AIDS and Cancer, I worked hard to get an internship (dissertation) at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Newark. My thesis research involved the study of Structure-function relationship in HIV-1 Reverse Transcriptase (HIV-1 RT) enzyme which is essential for viral replication and establishing infection in the host cells. I authored a research paper in Biochemistry on this thesis research. In this project, my research approach involved the construction of Wild type HIV-1RT and its mutant derivatives using site-directed mutagenesis. Further, these mutants were expressed and purified using His tag column chromatography which was subsequently characterized in-depth.
This achievement intrigued me so much that I took an extension for an additional 18 months to continue on this project. In this phase I also worked on two other projects; HCV- host-cell interaction and Molecular mechanism of Fuse binding protein (FBP) in HCV mediated pathogenesis. The experiments involved stable cell line (MH-14 Human Hepatocellular Carcinoma cell line) generation, RT PCR and real-time PCR, Western blotting and affinity capture of HCV RNA and identification of associated cellular/viral factors by proteomics. It gave me immense satisfaction and a sense of pride when my hard work and determination gave me a reward in the form of 5 publications in widely accepted international journals.
Teaching Experience & Present Research:
Owing to my growing propensity to this field and my updated knowledge, I was offered an Assistant professor position at Dr. James Doug Memorial affiliated to HJGF University. During this period I taught subjects like Cell Biology, Microbiology and Elements of Biotechnology (theory & practical lectures) to undergraduate students. I tried to ensure the usage of novel teaching styles and aides which would get the students interested in the subject and leave the concepts engraved in their mind.
Due to the enriching research & teaching exposure and publications, Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research, and Education in Cancer – Sweden´s leading cancer research center took me on board as Senior Research Fellow in Translational Research Lab. The laboratory is headed by Principal Investigator Prof. (Dr.) Carrie Pitt; Dr. Erick Beans Chair in Translational Research and Professor Emeritus.
My current project “DNA, Damage, Repair in Cancer” involves isolation of Chromatin fragments (Cfs) from the serum of cancer patients and healthy volunteers using an affinity column. Further, I have characterized isolated Cfs by Mass spectrometry and Western Blotting. We have come across an interesting observation that Cfs, while in circulation, can freely enter into healthy cells and integrate into their genomes thereby damaging their DNA. My study also involves DNA damage-repair pathway proteins mainly Gamma-H2AX and Caspase, both in vitro and in vivo. My role in the laboratory is to perform blotting technique, DNA isolation and purification, isolation and purification of Chromatin, electrophoresis, ELISA and inflammatory markers quantification by flow-cytometry, etc.
My Aspirations:
I have the goal of becoming a scientist and expand my horizons of knowledge. To accomplish this, I am required to learn the latest trending technology and a Ph.D. in this field would be an added advantage to my profile. I would like to join a research team in an organization engaged in the development of this and related fields. I aspire to involve myself in conducting laboratory research, as I am more of a practical oriented person. Currently, I seek to becoming a thorough professional by completing a Doctorate program and establishing a research niche for my career profile.
Providing me an opportunity to study at the LMNO university will immensely improve my chances of having better professional career growth and will add exceptional value to my profile. The interdisciplinary nature of the program will give me the opportunity to gain insights into diverse realms and will allow me to build on skills imperative to this profession. This would certainly motivate me to give my best in terms of performance in assignments, contribution towards the project/research work, and upholding the excellence sought by your university in all aspects.
