SOP Sample for PhD in Biotechnology and Food Sciences

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

A man of words and not of deeds is a garden full of weeds.”

The principles underlying this saying ignite me to achieve my goals in life. When this hard work transforms itself into the achievement of the target goal, happiness and satisfaction develop the willpower to set bigger goals.

Academics:

I have completed B. Tech in Food Engineering and Technology from the Institute of Chemical Technology, Helsinki, Finland. This brings pure and applied sciences of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology together. Over the course, I have gained an interest in food process engineering and product development, food analysis, and food biotechnology. After having gained command over these aspects of the curriculum, I decided to step into a training program in biological sciences and also use the concepts learned for conducting research. I underwent hands-on training in gene cloning, molecular markers’ study and cell culture at KET’s Scientific Research Centre, Helsinki 2014. I also got an opportunity to complete my first undergraduate research project relating to nanotechnology here.

I have completed three research projects in school which were based on biofuel production from Calophyllum Inophylum and Garcinia Indica oils using transesterification (2008), a study of carbonate and sulfate sequestration abilities of Chlorella Vulgaris in an attempt to use similar micro-algae in mitigation of water pollution due to POP idol immersions (2009) and value-addition to fungal biodiversity in the air by isolating them on PDA plates (2010). These projects have envisioned me three criteria for research which are novelty, environmental friendliness, and applicability to society.

These ethics made me choose green synthesis technology for nanoparticles and I used them so far unexploited Phoenix dactylifera fruit extract for their synthesis. The characterization using UV-Visible spectroscopy, SEM, and EDS were done and the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities were studied using DPPH and disc diffusion assays respectively.

I attended 3 conferences namely SCHEMCON, Food Sweden and HGFD section conferences in 2016, and presented my research. Attending these conferences majorly enlightened me about the use of ultrasound in the food industry, biosensors for pathogen and toxin detection and identification of genetically modified organisms. These learning have amplified my interest in novel processing techniques, analytical & biotechnological opportunities available in the food industry. I also won the best poster awards at these conferences, the last one being a felicitation by the Royal Society of Chemistry for my research on silver nanoparticles.

The happiness and satisfaction received after having conducted research that was awarded at such conferences motivated me to work on a year-long project on bio-transformation of fatty acids to Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA). It was based on fermentation in an optimized medium containing castor oil hydrolysate for bio-transformation of Ricinoleic acid to CLA and also fatty acids in high-fat milk to CLA. The fatty acid profiling in the fermentation matrices was studied using GC-FID analysis. I will be able to complete this project by 2017.

Apart from academic research, I also did an internship at Purple Hat LLC, Sweden whereby I learned lab-scale production of tortillas, cakes, cookies, granola bars. I also accomplished projects on the replacement of chemical emulsifiers with enzymes like amylases, lipases, and even phospholipases and hydrocolloids like Xanthan gum.

I also accomplished product development like whole wheat flour tortillas, germinated flour tortillas, and tortillas with added inulin. I learned quality control methods like stickiness study, rollability, foldability and also instrumental techniques like Farinograph, Texture analyzer, Rheometer, etc. Sensory evaluation, rough prototyping, and mock consumer interviews as a part of Consumer First Design were some other learnings. This has given me an overview of industrial research and development.

I completed a seminar review on Value-addition to Sub-Tropical Exotic fruit wastes and also worked on a project on Electrochemical Urea Biosensor based on urease, functionalized silver nanoparticles and graphene using mixture design and optimization using Response Surface Methodology to get desired sensitivity, limit of detection, response time and stability.

I also wrote an article entitled In Vitro Meat: The Future Food on The Chemical Web blog of JW Marriots, Asia-Pacific. Also, I have two prospective publications on Silver Nanoparticles and Sub-tropical Exotic Fruit Wastes. I have also presented B-Plan ideas on Picric Acid incorporated intelligent packaging for fish spoilage detection through its complexation with Trimethylamine released post-mortem and also on Probiotic chocolate & Probiotic coconut yogurt.

Aspirations:

Having experienced research and acquired skills in Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, and Food Processing, it has become my ambition in life to become a successful academician in the field of Food Science and Technology.

My goal to pursue this Ph.D. Degree in the field of Biotechnology and Food Sciences stems from the desire of studying at the reputed LMNO university. I believe your university offers the needed flexibility for the rapid and vast field. In addition research facilities together with your faculty and staff are truly outstanding. The food industry has certainly changed our lives for the better. In a very short period of time, significant changes are observed in certain things. It is also the industry that can change what is ahead of us, shaping our future that will soon come. For this reason, I desire to work in this stream to contribute to a better future and consumption of food products safe for humans. After pursuing a highly rewarding career in the area of my specialization I would offer my full potential at the workplace and contribute meaningfully to the long term growth of the company.

Being part of a university with such a diverse population of students will give me the much needed international exposure. Pursuing a doctorate degree in the esteemed LMNO University under the top-notch faculty would help me achieve my goals.
